Beta-carotene is a naturally occurring carotenoid that is widely present in plants. It serves as a precursor of vitamin A and is also one of the most common vitamin A supplements, with functions such as antioxidation and immune enhancement.
Its dietary sources are mainly dark-colored vegetables and fruits. After being ingested through the diet, it is converted into retinol (vitamin A) under the action of enzymes in the human body. This conversion is crucial for human visual development and helps maintain normal vision (especially dark adaptation ability). Meanwhile, as an antioxidant, beta-carotene can scavenge free radicals, reduce cell damage caused by oxidative stress, maintain skin health, and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In addition, beta-carotene also has the effect of enhancing the activity of immune cells, which can improve the body’s resistance to infections.
